White blood cell count (WBC)
What it measures
White blood cells are part of your immune system. This count measures how many are circulating in your blood.
Often reported in x10^9/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
Counts can rise or fall for many ordinary reasons, including a recent infection, stress, or certain medications, not only for serious causes.
Questions worth asking
- Was I unwell or on any medication around the time of this test?
- Would a differential count (breakdown by cell type) add useful information?
- Is a repeat test recommended to see if this changes?
