Platelets

What it measures

Platelets are small cell fragments in your blood that help it clot when you're injured.

Often reported in x10^9/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Both low and high platelet counts have many possible everyday explanations, from lab variation to recent illness, and aren't automatically a bleeding or clotting disorder.

Questions worth asking

  • Is this an isolated result or part of a pattern?
  • Should I mention any bruising or unusual bleeding I've noticed?
  • Is a repeat count useful before drawing any conclusions?
