Red blood cell count (RBC)

What it measures

This measures the number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells in a given volume of your blood.

Often reported in x10^12/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

It's typically interpreted together with hemoglobin and hematocrit rather than alone, since the three tend to move together.

Questions worth asking

  • How does this fit with my hemoglobin and hematocrit results?
  • Could altitude, hydration, or smoking be relevant here?
  • Is further testing needed, or is this within my normal pattern?
