Hematocrit

What it measures

Hematocrit is the percentage of your blood volume made up of red blood cells.

Often reported in %. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

It moves closely with hemoglobin and is usually interpreted together with it. On its own, a result outside range doesn't point to a specific cause.

Questions worth asking

  • How does this compare with my hemoglobin result?
  • Could hydration level at the time of the draw have affected this?
  • Is there a pattern across my past results worth discussing?
