Triglycerides

What it measures

Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood used for energy, and they're strongly affected by recent food intake.

Often reported in mg/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Because triglycerides respond quickly to diet and fasting status, a single result is often re-checked with a fasting sample before drawing conclusions.

Questions worth asking

  • Was this a fasting sample, and would a fasting re-check help?
  • Could recent alcohol or carbohydrate intake be relevant?
  • How does this fit with my other lipid results?
