Iron
What it measures
This measures the amount of iron currently circulating in your blood, bound to a transport protein.
Often reported in µg/dL. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.
Why it matters
Serum iron fluctuates through the day and with recent diet, so it's usually interpreted alongside ferritin and TIBC rather than alone.
Questions worth asking
- Should this be read together with ferritin and TIBC?
- What time of day was this sample drawn, and could that matter?
- Is further iron-study workup a reasonable next step?
