AST

What it measures

AST is an enzyme found in the liver and other tissues, including muscle, released into the blood when those cells are stressed.

Often reported in U/L. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes, so always compare with the range printed on your own report.

Why it matters

Because AST isn't liver-specific, it's usually interpreted alongside ALT to help clarify whether the liver is the likely source.

Questions worth asking

  • How does this compare with my ALT result?
  • Could recent intense exercise or muscle strain be relevant?
  • Is further liver evaluation worth discussing?
